Using ecology to restore land and water
Spike rush is a mat-forming perennial that reproduces rapidly by rhizomes or seeds. The slender stems grow in clusters. The flowers are in small brown spikelets at the ends of the stems. It is a pioneer species that populates mud flats very quickly and can withstand salty and anaerobic (lacking oxygen) soil conditions. Spike rush provides wildlife habitat for wetland animals.
