Sweet Flag

Acorus americanus

Sweet flag is a wetland perennial with lime green sword-like leaves that resemble iris and cattail leaves. Both the leaves and rhizomes have a sweet, spicy scent. The flowering stalks are covered with green flowers that later mature to brown seeds. The plant spreads by rhizomes and seeds and is great for shoreline stabilization. Sweet flag grows in saturated soils and shallow waters of marshes, ponds, and lakes.
