RESTORATION TYPE:Minnesota Native Short Grass PrairieLOCATION:Minnetrista MNDURATION:June 2020WORK DESCRIPTION:Converting farm pasture land from brome grass to a diverse mix of prairie grasses and flowersJanuary 15, 2024 2020 | Minnetrista Native Prairie In June of 2020, new homeowners approached us seeking assistance with introducing native plants to their property. Despite their previous attempts, their lack of success prompted them to seek expert help. After the initial consultation, our team identified the significant depletion of soil quality due to years of intensive farming and the abundance of invasive species as major obstacles. However, we recognized that the land was suitable for restoration and recommended planting a native shortgrass prairie to restore the area’s natural habitat. We began the restoration process by removing non-native vegetation that had taken over the area by using a combination of chemical treatments and manual labor. Subsequently, we reintroduced carefully selected native grass and wildflower species that were well-suited to the local conditions and capable of thriving in the low-quality soil present at the site. Once the initial installation was complete, we implemented a maintenance program to ensure the success of the restoration project. This included regular mowing to control invasive species and promote the growth of native vegetation, ensuring the project’s success. Today, the native shortgrass prairie is a vibrant and thriving ecosystem, boasting a diverse array of plant and animal life. This project serves as a model for other homeowners in the area looking to enhance their environmental footprint and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability by restoring degraded farmland on their property to a visually stunning restored prairie with ecological restoration.
