Using ecology to restore land and water
January 15, 2024
For this project, homeowners in St. Bonifacius, MN approached us in need of an alternative to turf on their property. They were frustrated with the need for frequent watering and mowing, as well as constant flooding issues after rainfall. Recognizing the environmental and monetary costs associated with their lawn’s upkeep, they sought a better solution. We suggested creating a rain garden bioswale on their property, which they enthusiastically embraced.
We worked closely with the homeowners to find the ideal location for this St. Bonifacius rain garden that would both serve its intended function and enhance the visual appeal of their property. Our team carefully selected and installed native plant species well-suited to the local environment. We then spent two years maintaining the rain garden to ensure its success, and the result was a beautiful and sustainable alternative to their previous lawn.
This St. Bonifacius rain garden bioswale was highly effective in capturing excess water and completely alleviated the flooding issues the homeowners were facing. It also attracted an array of beneficial wildlife, such as birds and butterflies. Although the bioswale requires some long-term maintenance, the native plants installed require very little water or chemical inputs, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly investment for the homeowners. Overall, we are thrilled to have been able to help the homeowners create this beautiful and sustainable solution with our natural landscaping services.
