RESTORATION TYPE:Buckthorn Removal and Native Prairie InstallationLOCATION:Golden Valley, MNDURATION:2015WORK DESCRIPTION:Converting buckthorn dominated woodland to ecological restoration by adding a diverse array of native prairie and wetland plant speciesFebruary 10, 2025 2015 | Golden Valley Native Prairie In the summer of 2015, homeowners reached out to us with a challenge – transforming their ecologically barren property into a native prairie in Golden Valley, MN. Their property was infested with emerald ash borer, and their mature ash trees needed to be removed. Compounding the issue, invasive buckthorn had taken hold, and the imminent removal of their mature trees left the property vulnerable to buckthorn encroachment. Luckily, they sought our help, and together, we devised a plan to reclaim their land. After removing the EAB infested trees, our team took charge. We began by cutting and treating the established buckthorn population on the property in the Fall of 2015. Subsequently, an herbicide treatment the following growing season targeted any resprouts or new seedlings. From there, our installation team seeded and planted thousands of native plants. Since the seed bank still harbored invasive species, our dedicated maintenance team diligently removed any weed species, allowing the native plants to fully establish. Now that native species have established, this native prairie in Golden Valley barely resembles its previous state. Thanks to these proactive homeowners, an area destined to be overrun by buckthorn was saved. If you’re struggling to take control of your own property, we can help!
